140801 Flumpool 5th Anniversary Tour [Moment] Singapore Press Conference

Flumpool-17
On 1 August evening, Flumpool held their 5th Anniversary Tour 2014 <Moment> Open Press Conference at Jstage, prior to their first solo concert tour the next day.

On their comeback after a 6 months break, Ryuta Yamamura (Vocalist) expressed his excitement in holding their first solo concert and coming to Singapore once again to meet the fans. The members remained secretive when asked if they had prepared any special performances for the concert.

Flumpool-1
When asked when was their most memorable moment since debut, Kazuki Sakai (Guitarist) cheerfullly said, “Of course it’s when we come to Singapore!”. Ryuta added that the Budokan concert held in Japan last October was unforgettable, but it was a shame they couldn’t share it with their Singapore fans. Seiji Ogura (Drummer) also added that <Moment> would be special because it’s their first solo concert.

In response to this, Genki Amakawa (Bassist Guitarist) shared, “It was when I received my payment for the first time, (laughs) because my bank account had always been in a negative figure.”

Flumpool-4
The topic later on switched to choosing a song which represents their journey thus far. Seiji chose Akashi, for it was memorable when he sang with the secondary school choir; as well as during the concert with fans. Both Ryuta and Genki chose their debut song Hana ni Nare. Kazuki initially picked Taisetsu na Mono, but later picked Frame when the members complained that he was not even involved in the shooting of music video for Taisetsu na Mono.

Flumpool-11

In response to their favorite Singapore food, Ryuta said, “Chili crab! But more so the fried mantou that comes with it, not the crab itself. (Laughs).”

On behalf of the band, Ryuta shares that Flumpool’s style of music has undergone some changes over the years. They started off with a sensitive yet strong image expressed through their lyrics, and later focussed more on band sounds, which showed their maturing and growing side.

When asked about their fourth visit to Singapore and Ryuta’s Mandarin skills, though Ryuta did not exactly answer the question, he delighted the fans by showing off his Mandarin proficiency.

In Mandarin, he said, “The best moment is having a concert with the fans. Our last concert at the café, fans were jumping in front of our stage!”

Kazuki recalls his previous visit where he took a picture with the Merlion, pretending as if he drank the water that came out of the Merlion’s mouth.

Flumpool-5

In response to their future plans, Ryuta explains they had previously worked with Mayday, the popular Taiwanese alternative rock band. Flumpool was inspired by Mayday, and aspires to become a band that would attract fans in every country.

Before they ended the press conference, Flumpool shared an acoustic live version of Hana ni Nare with their fans who came to support them. In addition, they handed out autographed posters to their fans who have bought Premium VIP tickets to their concert.

Special thanks to ONE Production for the invitation to this press conference.

They will be joined by household names Chua Enlai who will appear in character as The Noose’s Pornsak & Esmond Wan, Pan Ling Ling, Cynthia Koh and Priscelia Chan. Hosting the free concert from 7 pm to 9 pm are 987FM’s radio deejays Gerald Koh (better known as Boy Thunder) and Kimberly Wang.

Organised by NTU students, NTU Fest marks the start of the University’s new academic year and aims to raise money for an endowment fund in aid of needy students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). The event on August 16 is open to the public and admission is free.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mr Chang Long Jong said, “MediaCorp is proud to be part of this meaningful initiative by NTU students. As an organisation, MediaCorp has its own Corporate Social Responsibility programme that focuses on helping the Elderly and Youth-At-Risk. NTU Fest is yet another way and certainly a fun avenue for our artistes to make a difference to society, while reaching out to their many ardent fans and the public.”

NTU Fest’s organising chairperson Ms Wu Guo Yi, a final-year chemistry student, said, “The NTU Fest is really turning out to be an all-star event that will appeal to everyone. With more than two dozen Singaporean and Korean pop stars coming together, concert-goers will be in for a mega-treat! It’s amazing to see the immense support that we’ve been given. Everyone is working very closely together, to make it the best day possible.”

Rising stars Zhang Zhen Huan, Jayley Woo and Tracy Lee, and the Noose’s Chua Enlai will be making an appearance at NTU Fest’s carnival in the afternoon from 3pm.  They will be stationed at the Toggle booth to interact with students and visitors. ‘Bad boy’ Ian Fang, onscreen sweetheart Julie Tan and Star Search Telegenic Award-winner Ya Hui will also be making a special appearance at the booth from 6pm.

Taking to the stage in the concert in the evening is Final 1 champion Farisha Ishak. She will display her stellar vocals singing two songs from her first album, Aligned, released earlier this year.

The stars of tomorrow – the 12 finalists of Project Superstar, Singapore’s most talked-about singing competition – Abigail, Amanda, Benita, Germaine, Jo, Yan Hua, Aedan, Alfred, Bryan, Jayden, Justin and Kai Zheng – will join their voices to sing two songs, including the competition’s popular theme song.

The new cast of Mata-Mata, including Rebecca Lim, Pan Ling Ling, Priscelia Chan, Cynthia Koh, Divian Nair, Fish Chaar and Rayve Tay will also be on stage to entertain and play games with the crowd.  They will also be sharing some sneak peeks of the show’s new season, which premieres on September 1.

The concert will peak with a special performance by Korean rapper Kang Gary, one of the seven hosts of the immensely popular entertainment show Running Man and his singing partner, Jung-In.

Ahead of the event, Kang Gary had a special message to NTU students and his fans. He said: “This is a very meaningful charity event organised by NTU undergraduates in aid of needy students from another institution. I was an active student myself during my university days so I can feel their warm enthusiasm and understand all the hard work needed to organise a public event of this scale. Jung In and I are delighted to support them by performing free at NTU Fest. I look forward to meeting my fans in Singapore and I urge all of them to support this wonderful charity event by NTU students.”

Fellow K-pop star Jung In said, “When I heard about this charity event the NTU students were planning, I thought it was such a fantastic idea. It is very admirable that the NTU students are helping other students to receive the financial support they need for their education so they can create a better life for themselves and their families. Music touches everyone and Gary and I are happy we can use our music to help them achieve their target.”

All the celebrities attending and performing at the event are contributing their talents to charity. Education Minister, Mr Heng Swee Keat will launch the carnival and flag-off the 4.8-kilometre 5TYLO MILE-O Run.

The public can support this charity event by buying carnival tickets for use at the various booths and taking part in the 5TYLO MILE-O fun run in the afternoon. The carnival booths, run by NTU and ITE students, will feature food, games and fun activities for all ages.

Runners in the 5TYLO MILE-O run, which costs $10 to register, will take an exciting route around the historic Civic District along the Singapore River, from Esplanade Park through Fort Canning Hill and back to the Padang.

Fans who would like to get up close with the artistes, can try to get their mosh pit tickets in various ways, including taking part in the Facebook contests and giveaways by NTUsg (NTU’s Facebook page), NTU Fest and MediaCorp’s Toggle, Channel U, 987FM, Yes 93.3FM, i-Weekly, 8-Days and MeRadio.sg.

Mediacorp is the official media partner of NTU Fest. The platinum sponsor of this charity extravaganza is Singapore Press Holdings’ online job portal, STJobs. Other sponsors and partners include The Straits Times, Hong Leong Finance, McDonald’s and Compressport Singapore.

K-Pop stars to perform at NTU students’ fundraiser party at the Padang

Charity drive in aid of needy ITE students off to a flying start with $100,000 already in the bag

Two of K-Pop’s hottest stars – Running Man’s Kang Gary and singer Jung In – will perform one night in Nanyang Technological University’s extravaganza at the Padang on 16 August.

Organised by NTU students, NTU Fest, which is open to the public, aims to raise money for the ITE Endowment Fund for needy ITE students. The full-day event culminates in a special performance by Korean rapper Kang Gary, best known as one of the seven hosts of the hugely popular entertainment show Running Man.

The Festival’s organising chairperson Ms Wu Guo Yi, a final-year chemistry student, said, “Through NTU Fest, the public will experience up-close the vibrancy and energy of NTU students. This is truly a landmark event that demonstrates the best of what we NTU students can be, when we work together as one. The support by NTU students for ITE students will also foster closer ties and goodwill between our two institutions.”

“We are very encouraged by the strong support from NTU students and the community so far. As university students, we are privileged to receive a first-class education and we should do our best to give others a leg up too on their education journey. It’s important that we do what we can to help them overcome their financial obstacles,” she added.

Prior to the evening concert, Education Minister, Mr Heng Swee Keat, will officially launch the carnival at the Padang. Mr Heng will also flag off the 4.8-kilometre 5TYLO MILE-O Run, which will take participants through Singapore’s historic Civic District, starting from Esplanade Park along the Singapore River through Fort Canning Hill and back to the Padang.

K-pop stars performing their hit singles

Kang Gary and Jung In are expected to perform their latest hit single Your Scent as well as songs from their previous albums.

Gary, whose real name is Kang Hee-gun, has been active in the Korean hip-hop music scene since the 1990s. In 2002, he formed the rap group Leessang. Jung In debuted in their song Rush, which won the hip-hop music awards at the Mnet KM Music Video Festival that same year and their music video has already chalked up more than 1.2 million views on Youtube.

Many credited the perfect blend of their voices as a reason for the song’s success. This was also the beginning of Leessang’s long partnership with Jung In.

Gary is a household name, mainly due to his appearances on Running Man, a monster hit worldwide which started in 2010. When he and Jung In released their new collaborative single Your Scent in May this year, they not only raced up the charts, but also topped the trending topics of the day on Weibo, China’s Twitter-Facebook hybrid.

Inspiring the community

NTU Fest kicks off the University’s new academic year and will be the highlight of the Freshman Welcome Week. Themed Seeing Beyond Yourself, it aims to showcase the diverse creative talents at NTU, and to inspire students to surpass themselves and contribute to the community.

Proceeds from the sale of the carnival coupons and 5TYLO MILE-O run which costs $10 to register, will go towards the Institute of Technical Education, which the student organisers have chosen as the event’s beneficiary. The funds raised will go towards the institute’s Endowment Fund which provides financial assistance to needy ITE students.

Even before the race is flagged off, the students have already raised $100,000 and they are highly optimistic that they will raise even more in the weeks leading up to the event day.

Commending the students, NTU Provost, Prof Freddy Boey said, “This festival is a great way for our students to take the lead by being role models for current and future NTU students to care for our community by raising money for needy ITE students. I hope this will inspire NTU, ITE and other students in Singapore, and spur them to achieve their best potential.”

Student groups from both NTU and ITE will be running the carnival booths, where attendees can expect a wide variety of local and international cuisine, games and fun activities for the whole family.

Organisations and the public wishing to support the NTU students in this fundraising extravanganza can contact the student organizers.

“We are very grateful to have the support of partners and sponsors such as Hong Leong Finance, Mediacorp, The Straits Times and Abwin Pte Ltd.

“We hope to get more sponsors and donors in the next few weeks so please contact us if you are interested to be part of this meaningful event,” said Guo-Yi.
