Are You Ready To Play With Jolin Tsai?

IMG_020224th July 2015 – The Queen of Chinese Pop was back in town for her fourth concert PLAY WORLD TOUR, titled after her latest album.

The night was full of the sexy entertainment and chock full of entertaining tunes that had the entire audience on their feet. Sets and costumes were spared no expense, as the singer donned headpieces and multiple costumes amidst props like a huge diamond-studded skull and a Barbie doll set up.

IMG_0505

Jolin Tsai definitely knew how to impress as she appeared on stage with headpiece full of silvery snakes that each had a life of its own to the appropriately named song, “Medusa”. Her vocal skills had definitely improved since the last time she was here four years ago, and it was lovely to see Jolin rocking fast tempo songs to soaring notes in ballads.

IMG_0223

Going back to her roots, Jolin pulled out hits and classics from her 16 years worth of tracks like “Prague Square” and “Dancing Diva”, as well as trying to squeeze in as much songs as possible in the three hour long concert. From highlights of certain tracks to medleys, the singer spiced things up with different arrangements that was a treat for fans, some of who flew in specially for her concert.

Her posse of dancers also did not let down, as they first appeared in high heels, providing a subtle subversion of gender roles, and later on became gazers in a jazz club scene.

IMG_0281

Despite having a 360-degree stage, Jolin was not intimidated by the sheer size of the stage as she constantly revolved around the four sides of the stage. The pint-sized power dancing machine showed off her moves through the physically demanding dance routines, and did not seem to tire, fitting her title as a dancing diva.

Another highlight was when Jolin took a trip down memory lane, and turned the stage into a scene straight out of a 1920s movie as she appeared in a flapper dress.

Having made the news previously for her controversial track, “We’re All Different, Yet The Same” which she performed towards the end of the night, Jolin’s conviction in using music to support what she stands for showed her firm beliefs in encouraging a person to follow his feelings.

Known for her ease at speaking with the audience, fans were worried that fan interaction would be kept to a minimum as Jolin shared, but the singer started loosening up towards the end of her concert. Jolin’s musical ties to the local music scene were through two Singaporean musicians, brothers Paul and Peter Lee, who were amongst her first producers.

Jolin’s confidence and ease on stage comes with her many years of experience on stage, and she was in control of the entire atmosphere. She knew exactly how to get the energy level up, from telling the crowd to “Get Off Your Asses!” to snapping selfies.

Greetings from SEKAI NO OWARIhttp://media.mtvnservices.com/embed/mgid:uma:video:mtvasia.com:1221500

SEKAI NO OWARI means ‘end of the world’. Armed with an unusual name matching their unique sounds which leave a lasting impression both visually and musically, SEKAI NO OWARI is currently one of the most popular and skilled creative groups in Japan. Comprised of four members: sound producer, lead guitarist and band leader, Nakajin; lead vocal and concept maker, Fukase; stage producer and pianist, Saori; and DJ LOVE, the clown masked DJ in charge of sounds choice and comedic talk, SEKAI NO OWARI is ready to take their originality to music fans in Southeast Asia for the first time.

Apink is currently one of the most idolized K-pop girl groups formed by A Cube Entertainment in 2011. Known for their sweet and innocent image and street style that has captivated fans around the world, the award-winning group consists of Park Cho-rong, Yoon Bo Mi, Jeong Eun-ji, Son Na Eun, Kim Nam Joo, Oh Ha Young.

Apink made a comeback with the recent release of their second album in three years, “Pink MEMORY” and title track “Remember” on 16 July. Within a day, they topped all the major Korean music charts, including MelOn, the biggest music streaming site in Korea, positioning them well to be one of the hottest this summer.

MTV World Stage Malaysia 2015 is presented by Sunway and supported by Tourism Malaysia. In Malaysia, it is ignited by Xpax, brought to you by Brickfields Asia College, Watsons Malaysia and supported by local broadcast partner, Astro. The show will premiere on MTV in Asia on Saturday, 26 September at 1.30pm (TH/WIB), 2.30pm (PH/SG) and 3.30pm (MY), Saturday, 10 October at 9pm (JP) and Sunday, 11 October at 12am (KR).

APINK

Apink started in 2011 with Son Na Eun, who was featured in Beast’s “Soom”, “Beautiful” and “Niga Jeil Joha” music videos in late 2010. Park Cho-rong, who appeared at the end of Beast’s “Shock” Japanese music video, joined next, as the group’s leader. This led to the addition of Oh Ha Young and Jeong Eun-ji, where the latter was introduced through a video of her singing a rendition of Jennifer Hudson’s “Love You I Do”. The final two members, Yoon Bo Mi and Kim Nam Joo, were introduced through the group’s reality show, Apink News.

The group has since gone on to release five Korean extended plays and one studio album. In April 2011, Apink released their first extended play (EP), “Seven Springs of Apink”, and performed a song from it, “Mollayo”, on Mnet’s M! Countdown. In the same year, they also released their first digital single, “It Girl” and a second EP, “Snow Pink”. Their rise was quickly recognized when they were awarded the “Best New Female Artist” at the 13th Mnet Asian Music Award and the “Idol Music Rookie Award” at the 19th Republic of Korea Culture and Entertainment Awards in the same year.

Over the last four years, the group has fast-tracked their success. In 2012, they released their first album, “Une Annee” and two digital singles, “April 19” and “Bubibu”. Their third EP was released in 2013, “Secret Garden” in 2014, they released their fourth digital single, “Good Morning Baby” and two EPs, “Pink Blossom” and “Pink Luv”, where the latter was released in November 2014 and was #1 on Gaon’s weekly album chart. In the same year, Apink released their first Japanese-language single, “NoNoNo” in October 2014.

The group has also performed live and on TV shows, including some members appearing on TV drama series.

The girl group popularity is clearly acknowledged well in the industry. With more than 20 music awards and more than 25 music program awards under the belt, their accolades have included “Best Newcomer Artist” at the 26th Golden Disk Awards, “Newcomer Award” at the 21st Seoul Music Awards, “Hot Performance Award” at the 3rd Gaon Chart K-pop Awards and the “Top 10” at the SBS Music Awards last year.

SEKAI NO OWARI

The hottest Japanese band started at a live music venue called club EARTH, which they created and managed on their own. They all lived there together creating music and discussing the future of the group. They even tore down the old walls to put up soundproof walls around the venue. Today, their passion and deep connection to each other has led to their status as one of the premier music acts in Japan.

Evolving at an incredible speed, most recently, they worked with Dan the Automator, an American hip hop producer (producer of Gorillaz’s debut album), and released the soundtrack, “ANTI-HERO”, the theme song for the highly-anticipated Japanese live-action movie, “Attack on Titan” last week. The movie will be released around the world in August (Part 1) and September (Part 2). “Attack on Titan” originated from the manga series, which has sold over 40 million copies in Japan since 2009.

SEKAI NO OWARI released their newest album, “Tree” in January 2015, which peaked at #1 on the Japan (Oricon) albums chart, which was also certified 2x Platinum sales in Japan after a month of its release. On 18-19 July, they performed a sold-out two-day show, “Twilight City” to about 140,000 fans at the Nissan Stadium, Japan’s largest venue.

Their originality and unique ideas are portrayed through “Tokyo Fantasy”, a concept that is of a large-scale fantasy, making attending the band’s live performances feel like a theme park, transporting fans to a completely different reality. This concept has been lauded all around the Japanese music industry.

In 2014, they held a major live music event which featured the popular American act OWL CITY as a special guest. Concurrently, SEKAI NO OWARI was featured in OWL CITY’s worldwide release“TOKYO”. They have also worked with renowned Dutch DJ/ Producer Nicky Romero on the release of their English single, “Dragon Night”.

In 2013, they released “RPG,” which has reached more than 73 million views on YouTube. In the same year, they performed their first outdoor live event, “Fire and Forest Carnival” to 60,000 fans over a 3-day period. Over the past four years, they have been consistently recognized in the Japanese music industry.

K-pop girl group Dal Shabet and MediaCorp celebrities headline NTU’s star-studded concert

Dalshabet (2)Dal Shabet (Photo provided by: NTU)

Singapore, 21 July 2015 – Dal Shabet, one of K-pop’s most popular girl groups and more than a dozen Mediacorp’s hottest stars and deejays will be performing at the Nanyang Technological University’s fiesta at the Marina Bay Promontory next month.

Open to the public, the free concert on 29 August is part of NTU Fest 2015, the university’s biggest student-run event. Comprising a day-long carnival, charity run and evening concert, the mega event marks the start of NTU’s new academic year and is part of the university’s celebration of the nation’s Golden Jubilee.

Dal Shabet is slated to perform some of their most popular songs at NTU Fest, including Joker, the title track from their latest EP Joker Is Alive, which has swiftly garnered more than 4.4 million views on YouTube since April this year.

The group is thrilled to perform in Singapore. They were first here in 2011 to make their maiden overseas appearance at Singapore’s Korean Music Wave concert.

Dal Shabet said, “University life holds our best memories of school, especially when we attend live concerts and have fun together. We’re very excited to be in Singapore performing for such a meaningful event and we will do our best to put up a good show for all our fans here. We hope everyone will come and support NTU Fest!”

President of the NTU Students’ Union, Ms Wu GuoYi, who initiated the first mega event last year, said, “We are really excited to have such high-powered celebrities devoting their time and talents to NTU Fest. This will certainly inspire our fellow student performers and volunteers to give their best. With a constellation of K-pop stars and MediaCorp artistes entertaining the crowd, this year’s NTU Fest concert will be an evening to remember.”

Platinum Media Partner MediaCorp contributes talents to NTU Fest

Launching the concert in the evening is Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education and Chairman of the Singapore50 (SG50) Steering Committee, who is expected to perform a National Day song, joined by the finalists of this year’s The Final 1.

Three of the Eight Dukes of Caldecott Hill – Shane Pow, Jeffrey Xu, and Zhang Zhen Huan – will add their star power for the occasion.

Elvin Ng, Jeffrey Xu and Zhang Zhen Huan, who are also among the cast of Channel 8’s new drama serial, Sealed with a Kiss, will be joined by award-winning actress Rebecca Lim on stage.

The young cast of Channel 5 drama, Tanglin, including Nat Ho, Eswari Gunasagar, Elfaeza Ul Haq, Charlie Goh and Jae Liew will also be sharing the spotlight with their Channel 8 counterparts.

With at least 199 episodes in the works, Tanglin is MediaCorp TV Channel 5’s first long-form English drama that centres on the lives of multi-racial and multi-generational families living in a middle income neighbourhood. This will be the first time that fans can get up close with the stars from the TV series since the show started last month.

Hosting the concert that evening are 987FM’s radio deejays Gerald Koh and Joakim Gomez, hosts of the zany show, The Bro Code. The 987FM Radio Star finalists will also be taking the stage.

“Music and performance have the power to bring people across generations and communities together, and we are delighted to support the NTU Fest through the participation of our artistes and personalities,” said Mr Lai Mun Dart, Head, Youth Segment, MediaCorp. “This is also an opportunity for us to support NTU students in a major initiative they are running. We’re truly impressed by their ideas, energy and drive to put together a great event for the community in a very special year for the nation.”

In addition to the Korean and MediaCorp stars, homegrown band District 12 will also be performing that evening.

Carnival promises fun for all

Earlier in the afternoon, Education Minister, Mr Heng Swee Keat will flag off the 500m kid’s run.

The carnival booths run by NTU students and vendors feature a variety of cuisines, games and fun activities for all ages.

The Straits Times, the event’s Gold Media Partner, will also have a booth at the NTU Fest carnival.

NTU students will also showcase their diverse creativity and talent on stage in the afternoon, alongside local pop bands ORANGECOVE and The Paragoei.

This is the second year that NTU Fest is being organised. Last year’s inaugural event at the Padang was a success, attracting more than 8,000 people and featured a slew of MediaCorp artistes and headline acts – K-pop stars Running Man’s Kang Gary and singer Jung In.

14 July 2015, Hong KongBTS will be holding their last stop of their ‘2015 BTS Live Trilogy in Hong Kong: Episode II. The Red Bullet’ world tour at Hong Kong’s Asia World Expo, Arena on the 29th of August this year. Since it is BTS’ first solo concert in Hong Kong, the organisers, Sun Entertainment Culture (太陽娛樂) and JACSO Entertainment (加秀娛樂) have decided to let everybody know more about them through an exclusive interview.

When asked about what they would like to do in Hong Kong, Rap Monster, Suga and Jungkook mentioned that they are excited about the food in Hong Kong, especially the street food. They added that they have heard that Hong Kong is a food paradise and are really excited to try out the food when they are there. Suga exclaimed that he would like to eat Hong Kong fishballs (魚蛋) while Jungkook commented that he wanted to learn Wing Chun (a type of Chinese martial arts) from his idol, Donnie Yen (甄子丹 – a very famous Hong Kong actor; Martial arts artiste). Jungkook: “Donnie Yen is my idol, he is really handsome and cool!”. We do hope that he will have the chance to learn Wing Chun from Donnie Yen one day!

It is a well known fact that BTS can dance and sing well; are there any type of drama or variety shows that the BTS members are interested in and would like to attempt? Jimin immediated responded that he wants to try acting and all the members were very supportive of him. V and Jungkook mentioned that if they were given the chance, they would like to participate in a Hong Kong martial arts movie and assured that they will do their best in it.

It is BTS’ first solo concert in Hong Kong, but it is not their first visit as they have been there for MAMA. All the members stated that Hong Kong fans are very enthusiastic and Suga added on saying: “Especially the overflowing love from Hong Kong fans. It made me wonder why Hong Kong is the last stop of this tour? We should have come here earlier!”. Jin also conveyed that there were many Hong Kong fans who went to Seoul for their fansigns and that made him want to meet Hong Kong fans as soon as possible; and to perform for them.

All the members are born after the year 1990 and even though there is still some years before they all turn 25, what would be some goals or wishes they would like to accomplish before they turn 25? Regarding this question, the eldest member, Jin, said that he wants to travel with the members while he is still young, fit and healthy. With this, all the members agreed with this suggestion and stated that it has been a long time since they had the time to play/travel around.

The members seemed really close with one another and it is a surprise that they did not know each other before they formed BTS. The members added that they had a deep impression of V. Jin and Suga then teased V saying that in the past, V was very tanned and jokingly asked if he was wearing dark-brown socks today. Rap Monster comforted V by saying, “The reason why we have been improving is because of V!”. Jimin, the last member who joined BTS, said that he did not really have friends initially and added, “Thanks to V’s care and concern, I was able to adapt and be comfortable quickly so I am very grateful to him”. When asked about if they were awkward with one another when they stayed in the dorm together, they recalled that they were not awkward with each other but what really bothered them then were the number of mosquitoes in the dorm. Jin recalled: “It was the first time that I have seen so many mosquitoes, it was terrible.” Suga: ‘It was like a mosquito breeding ground!“.

BTS had debuted for 2 years and have been gaining popularity and recognition. To those who do not know who is BTS, how would you introduce yourself to them? J-Hope: “希望哥 (which literally means Hope Brother)”. Jimin: “Chim Chim”. Rap Monster: “Rap Mon!”. Jungkook would introduce himself using his original name, while Jin confidently said, “帥人 (which literally means handsome human’).” Suga: “閔Suga 天才 (which means Min Suga Genius).”. V: “V最型 (which means V-the-most fashionable)”. All the members of BTS were very interested in learning Cantonese and even asked the translator to teach them words such as ‘pretty girl’ and ‘I love you’. Hopefully they would be able to make use of what they have learnt during the concert!
